It’s a peculiar modern habit that we question what we know best and doubt what we want most. I agree with you, and yes, love takes work and sacrifice. But it is natural and the best part of being human.

Thank you, and yes I agree completely.

I believe this was the driving force behind modernization: to break up holistic systems into monetizable units that could then be sold to various markets around the world. Part of that was to cast doubt on what we once took for granted in order to replace it with something from elsewhere. It's not all bad, after all modernity helped end some pretty awful practices around the world, like foot binding or cannibalism, but it also indulges a lot of selfishness and self-doubt.

love this bit: love means having to show your sorry. also reminds me of something evolutionary scientist call: costly signaling or "honest signaling". Actions > words

Thank you, I'm glad you got something out of my writing.

I think there's definitely something to this. From an evolutionary perspective, a partner who will work at making a delicious meal or labor over a honey-do list is maybe not that far off from a peacock with more/brighter plumage. It's an approximate answer to the question, "just how much will you invest in this coupling?"
